Technical University of Braunschweig
Partner description:
The working group of pilot B2 is located in germany. It consists of University of Technology Braunschweig (TUBS), RWTH Aachen University (RTHA), energydesign braunschweig (edbs), Rumpe Information Technologies (RIT), both spin-off companies of the universities. The partners of the working group have cooperated on former projects, e.g. the development of a web based tool for evaluating energy concepts. Some of the partners are located in the Center for Informatics at the University of Technology Braunschweig. The Center for Informatics is also the demonstration object of the prototype.

The software is implemented by the Department of Computer Science 3 (RTHA). The hardware implementation is done in cooperation with the manufacturer and the department of administration of TUBS.

University of Technology Braunschweig - Institute of Building Services and Energy Design (IGS)

The IGS - Institute for Building Services and Energy Design at the University of Technology Braunschweig handles the entire spectrum of energy and climatic design in buildings. The main areas of activity are building technology, edificial physics as well as passive and active usage of solar energy for residential and office buildings. Along with new buildings, the restoration of existing buildings takes center stage.

The research and development of new concepts, systems and components of innovative architecture are operated by computer-aided simulations, experimental investigations in the institute’s laboratory, as well as realization and validation in practice. At the same time, the IGS cooperates in many projects with other research establishments and companies from commerce and industry. Appropriations are provided by, among others, the German Federal Environmental Foundation, the Federal Ministry of Economics and Labor as well as other institutions of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Work results are immediately expanded into the institute’s curriculum. In addition to lectures for basics and current topics, the IGS offers a simulation laboratory for the students, in which the possibilities of practical software for integral building planning can be experienced instantly.
CVs Key Personnel:
Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. M. Norbert Fisch M. Norbert Fisch has been the director of the IGS since 1996. The focus and “philosophy“ of the IGS is the integral planning of buildings while taking all relevant aspects of energy consumption and occupant comfort into account. A team of around 20 staff members works on innovative solutions in fields like edificial physics, heating, cooling, air conditioning and renewable energies. IGS has carried out more than numerous research projects over the last 12 years on national and European level.

M.Sc. Hanna Soldaty: Hanna Soldaty has been at the IGS since March 2008 – at first as a German foundation’s Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt scholarship holder and then as a scientific staff member. A scope of her vocational activity concerns promotion of energy efficiency in building stock and energy simulation studies. Additionally she focuses on users comfort in energy optimization aspect.

Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Mani Zargari: Mani Zargari has been at the IGS since 2004 as a scientific assistant. He mainly works on the evaluation of the energy efficiency of non residential buildings in different research projects. His main tasks are measurements on buildings, simulation studies regarding the thermal comfort and energy efficiency, research on air change and airflow inside the buildings.

University of Technology Braunschweig- Department of administration: Founded in 1745, the Technical University of Braunschweig is Germany's oldest technical university and looks back on a two and a half century tradition of academic teaching and research. Today the TU Braunschweig is the centre of one of the most active German research regions. The university has more than 14,000 students and employs 2,600 staff members, 1,600 of whom are scientists and researchers. It is organized in 10 departments and 111 institutes, offering a wide range of courses and research opportunities. In addition, a great deal of teaching and research takes place in interdisciplinary programs, laboratories, and centers whose work extends beyond traditional departmental boundaries.

Technical Support: All work will be carried out in cooperation with the building management service company that has built and maintains the systems in the center for informatics.
Participation in the project:
TUBS is the responsible of the Center for Informatics in Braunschweig, Germany where the Pilot B2 will be implemented. This organisation also contributes in the definition of energy efficiency policies in Germany and as a University is responsible of other public buildings. Also this public partner have the policy power for scaling the solution to other building and lighting areas in Braunschweig as well as transfer the project experience through its networks to other public organisations and private sectors at local and European level, assuring a long term impact.
